Holy Audacity, Batman!

“…it is easier to take much than little; it is easier to stand in a place of audacious trust than in a place of cautious, timid clinging to the shore.” —Streams in the Desert, March 28

As we face the global public health and economic COVID-19 crisis, we are being forced to adapt to extreme circumstances, to step out of our familiar grooves.

We are finding that we must seek new paths, must shift our thinking and be open to different and new ideas. While this can be stress-inducing, this can also be a great opportunity to widen our lenses and consider things that might seem “crazy.” Like these neighbors in San Mateo, dancing in the street to get their dose of social, physical connection!

Growing 10x is Easier than 2x

Despite the stress, you must keep moving forward. In fact, commit to making bigger progress now than you otherwise might have. It's easier to go big.

As Dan Sullivan of Strategic Coach likes to say, 10x is easier than 2x.

  • 2x progress can be achieved by working harder to improve what you’re already doing. Remain in the comfort of your well-worn grooves, and you’ll just get more of the same.

  • 10x progress requires a fresh, higher level of thinking: new methods, new habits, new attitudes and mindsets, maybe even new people. People who approach things differently than you do.

YET!

Abandon too much, and your progress may topple. You must thoughtfully discern which parts of the status quo must be abandoned.

Thoughtfully discerning what needs to change and what needs to stay the same is easier when you partner on the thinking with someone who approaches things with a different modus operandi (MO) than yours.

Some MOs approach risk comfortably, and even thrive on uncertainty, and tend to underappreciate solid, grounding elements in work or life.

A contrasting MO is naturally driven to preserve the tried and true, to reduce risk and uncertainty, and may tend to keep a tenacious grip on well-worn grooves.

Imagine the power of these two MOs working together, each cognizant and respectful of the other's different set of lenses. Each brings to the table strengths essential for effective change, and fills the gaps in the other's perspective. This kind of synergy makes the 10x path to progress more discernible.

To operate at our best, we should be aware of our instinctive MO - how we deal with new information, how we solve problems, how we face uncertainty and where we have blind spots. Even better, we should also be aware of the MO of our partners and teammates so that we intentionally combine our strengths for the greatest leverage.

The Kolbe A™ Index: It changed my life!!

One of the foundational tools to gain this self-awareness is the Kolbe A™ Index assessment. The most common refrain from successful advisors who have taken the Kolbe is "It changed my life!" The second most popular refrain is probably, "I thought there was something wrong with me! .... until I took the Kolbe and understood the strengths I bring to the table."
